He Was Born High and Carried Fear His Whole Life. Then Bruce Discovered Grace.

Bruce Perkins is from Chicago, Illinois, and he just completed the one-year Rise Discipleship program. But his story of rejection and hurt started before he ever had a say in it.
"I was born a crack baby, a product of that in my mother's womb. I was born high. My heart actually stopped."
He came into the world already fighting, and the hurt followed him. For most of his life, Bruce simply did whatever he wanted to do.
An Extended Hand
Then, in Pennsylvania, Bruce met a couple, a man and woman of God, who let him into their lives and spoke into his. They didn't lecture him. They offered him a hand.
"They said, if you want a way out, here's your way out. There's a place in Texas that could help you."
He took it.
What Grace Actually Meant
In the home, Bruce started waking up every morning and getting into the Word. And one lesson reshaped everything he believed about himself. He remembers Anthony G challenging him to go and learn what grace really is.
"He told me, God's grace has been on you since the time you gave your life to Christ. You just didn't know it."
For a man who had spent his whole life carrying rejection, that landed deep. Grace had been there the entire time. He just hadn't seen it.
Walking With His Head Up
The change in Bruce shows up in something as simple as the way he carries himself now.
"I no longer have to walk with my head down. I no longer walk in fear. I can walk in total freedom and peace of mind, knowing I can make mistakes and still get up and keep moving forward."
He wants to thank Pastor Rey for being obedient to the call over his life, making a way for men like him to walk this thing out and actually get it right. And Anthony G, a mighty man of God, for pointing him to grace. If God allows it, Bruce hopes to stay and be part of what's happening at Rise, walking it out alongside the brothers he now calls family.
